The Urban Vacuum – Presentation (FACTOR)

Sean Warkentine – Station Manager (Interim) at Met Radio 1280AM

New, young, emerging talents from rural communities are at a major disadvantage in so many ways, compared to those in urban settings. Fewer opportunities, smaller audiences, less pay, and little access to industry. It’s rare that artists are able to thrive outside of cities, creating something of a cultural vacuum. This session will act as an ideashare and brainstorm for how our sector might better encourage the flourishing of arts in smaller communities. Register Here – THIS EVENT IS IN-PERSON AND VIRTUAL

Bio: Sean Warkentine has been working in the campus/community radio sector for over 10 years. Beginning as the Production Coordinator at CKXU in Lethbridge, AB, he then spent 5 years working as the Music Director there, moved to Toronto to work as the Program Director at Met Radio in Toronto, and is currently wrapping up a term as interim-Station Manager there. He has been involved in music for much of his life, from early beginnings in hardcore punk, and later in ambient and experimental genres of electronic music.

Inside Music Departments: Demystifying the Radio Mailout Process – Workshop (FACTOR)

Jenny Mitchell, CFRU

Ever wonder what really happens when music gets sent to radio stations? This session dives into the world of music departments and radio mailouts—from the perspective of both the artist and the station. Drawing on firsthand experience doing independent mailouts for their own music and supporting other artists, as well as stepping into a campus station’s music department, the speaker will unpack the challenges, surprises, and lessons learned on both sides of the submission process.  Whether you’re an artist trying to get your music heard, or a station looking to streamline your inbox, this session intends to give space for us to learn from each other – bring your mail-out tips, your music-sorting tricks, and Music Department hacks and come help us collectively uncover some practical insights into how music flows through the system—and how we can all make it a little smoother. Register Here – THIS EVENT IS IN-PERSON AND VIRTUAL

Bio: Jenny Mitchell is a local musician, artist, mother, and school bus driver. She has been performing in bands in Guelph since she was fifteen, with her acts the Barmitzvah Brothers, Jenny Omnichord, and Bird City, and has performed in many other bands including Richard Laviolette (the Oil Spills, the Glitter Bombs), the Burning Hell, The Crying Out Loud Choir, Andrew Vincent, Blimp Rock, Pauly and the Blowbots and more.  She has a giant golden bus and a cat.  She works as CFRU’s Volunteer and Mobile Studio Coordinator, recruiting, training, helping and celebrating volunteers at the station, and developing and coordinating “mobile studio projects” to get more and different voices on our airwaves.  This includes initiatives such as “The Mobile Community Radio Show”, “Bridging the Social Distance”, the Campus Friends Radio Show, the Mini Interview Project, and tons of awesome projects in schools and senior centres.
